In the award-winning 1964 musical “Fiddler on the Roof,” Tevye tells us the fiddler’s presence on the roof represents a tradition that may not have an obvious reason, but works to maintain the fragile balance of life in the village. In Mark 7:5, Jesus is questioned by the Pharisees, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” In some of our Indian traditions, it is unacceptable to eat or even write with the left hand. The left hand is almost like a defiled hand. So how does God view our human traditions, which we allow to override His Word? God calls us hypocrites (Mark 7:6) because we honor Him with our lips, but not with our hearts. God rejects our worship (Mark 7:7) because we have replaced God’s Word with our traditions. God accuses us of making void His Word (Mark 7:13). My Lord, let your Word be the final word in my life, not the human traditions, which reject your commands.
