Freedom of speech is a fundamental right in the Indian constitution, and yet, India ranks 142nd on the world press freedom index. The preamble to the constitution describes India as a secular country, and yet, most roads in Delhi were renamed to Hindu names by a ruling political party. This disconnect between our ideals and our reality may be called hypocrisy, which is a malady seen in societies and families as well as in individuals. In Matt. 23:27-28, Jesus calls the Pharisees whitewashed tombs, beautiful on the outside and dead inside. So what is the remedy for hypocrisy? How do we make sure there is no disconnect between our hearts and our lips? There is only one way: to honor Jesus as our Lord and Savior. He alone can be the truth (John 14:6) who drives away hypocrisy. He alone can be the love that casts out fear, as hypocrisy is primarily a result of fear of man’s opinion (1 John 4:18). It is only the power of the Holy Spirit that can purify our lips and help us walk the talk (Acts 1:8).
