I once heard a story about a remote community in West Africa becoming Christians. Before they could be discipled or a local church planted, a cunning man began teaching a false gospel, urging believers to get rid of their earthly possessions as Jesus Christ would imminently appear. He tricked them by presenting at night in a room lit up with fireworks with a tape recorder transmitting a kind of “angelic” voice, and succeeded in robbing them of their valuables. Jesus told us that false messiahs and false prophets will claim His second coming. And that’s why He insists that all followers be rightly taught and care more about their readiness to withstand the tribulation days than to be worried about the order in which these events will happen. Anticipating God’s return should spur us to share the Gospel with those who have never heard the name of Jesus. There are still many nations that need to be reached by the Gospel (24:14).
