Experiences with God change our lives forever. When I read this passage about Jesus’ baptism, I am always reminded of my own baptism. At the age of 12, I was baptized in the waters of a lake. On that same day, when I came out of the water, I was also baptized with the Holy Spirit. I walked to the lakeshore overcome with joy, and I saw the sky open. I had a vision of angels that descended and ascended, rejoicing and celebrating with me, and I couldn’t stop laughing and praising God. From that day on, I was empowered by the Holy Spirit to be a witness of Jesus’ great redeeming love (Acts 1:8). I was never the same again. Just as Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit in the bodily form of a dove, we too need to be filled with the Holy Spirit to fulfill God’s purpose for our lives. For it is He who gives us authority, boldness, wisdom, and power to be witnesses and to share the Gospel. Come upon us, Holy Spirit! We need you!
