Jesus baptized with water to signify repentance, which is when we turn from sin and live faithfully unto God. John understood his role and stuck to his task: “But He who is coming after me is mightier than I.” We must understand who God is and who we are. I was tasked with the responsibility of convening a three-night “youth crusade.” I set aside time to pray daily. On the first night of the crusade, I took to the podium and allowed the Holy Spirit to have control of me. I was greeted with many congratulations, but He is the one who worked through me. John then says, “whose sandals I am not worthy to carry.” Only the lowliest of servants would be asked to carry their master’s sandals, and John saw himself to be unworthy of even that position in service to Jesus. This is humility at its best. “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire” told believers repentance was just the first step. They were to also expect great power with the coming of the Holy Spirit.
