Hunger and thirst are the invisible forces which drive our world. What does it mean to hunger and thirst for righteousness? While waiting for my taxi to fill up in Kampala’s busiest public transport hub, I couldn’t help but gaze at the hundreds upon hundreds of commuters and wonder what they were all up to in this dusty city. It dawns on me that all this traffic is driven by different hungers and thirsts — knowledge, money, food, fame, power — yet even when successful, the satisfaction we get is often fleeting. Matt. 5:6 points us to a certain way of finding lasting satisfaction and fulfillment, because we know without a doubt that He who promised is more faithful than anything we will ever experience. If we could only grasp this simple truth and run with it, there would be less emptiness in our world.
