The Lord Jesus Christ spoke the words in today’s passage in response to the request of James and John, who asked to be “seated with Him in glory” or be in an exalted position with Him (Mark 10:37). Such a request angered the rest of the disciples. Jesus replied that it was not for Him to grant such a request, but God only. Furthermore, they were not in a position to drink the “cup of suffering” that Christ was about to drink. Jesus then said that greatness begins with a spirit of servanthood. The Lord Jesus Christ demonstrated a spirit of servanthood in His life, ministry, and finally in His sacrificial death, and He calls all of His disciples — including us — to do so as well.
