Forgiveness. The Bible teaches us the source of forgiveness is God’s love (Ps. 51:1; Rom. 5:8). The Lord has made us for human relationships, and maintaining those relationships is impossible without forgiveness because of our sins. We are always hurting people and being hurt by them. Jesus wants us to love people despite their differences from us and even despite their mistakes. Love covers a multitude of sins (1 Pet. 4:8). When Jesus said we are supposed to forgive those who sin against us, so our Heavenly Father may forgive us (Matt. 6:12-15), he is not teaching that human forgiveness can be leveraged to merit the Divine pardon, as it may sound at first. We don’t earn forgiveness from the Lord because we forgive others. Instead, Jesus is teaching that no Christian would dare to ask the Lord for forgiveness without having canceled his neighbor’s debt.
