During His Last Supper, Jesus instituted the new covenant when He blessed the bread and wine. Jesus taught the crowd after the miraculous feeding of the 5,000 that He was the living bread, the manna who came down from Heaven.
The crowds deserted Him, but the disciples stuck with Him. This moment is their time of realization: There is no remission of sin without shedding of blood. This truth has been distorted and has seeped into the beliefs of various sects of the popular religions of India. You can see animals and birds being slaughtered and their blood shed, even today along the length and breadth of this vast country.
Jesus, the sinless lamb of God, was made sin and His blood was poured out for the whole world, that whosoever believes should not perish, but have eternal life.
