Why would God Almighty, the sinless one who does not need to repent, be baptized, which is a sign of repentance? Through His baptism, Jesus fulfilled all righteousness (Matt. 3:15). Fully God and fully human, Jesus’ baptism both affirmed that He was the Son of God (Mark 1:11) and identified Him with human sinners, foreshadowing the righteousness He would impart to us. Humility is central to God’s story. He could have redeemed humanity in any number of ways, but He chose to put on human flesh and suffer on our behalf. Paul writes in Phil. 2:6-8, “though He was in the form of God, He did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” If humility is the path God chose, it is imperative that we also humble ourselves for the sake of others. In a world obsessed with getting ahead, followers of Christ should choose to put others first.
