This verse is opportune for the times we are living in. Social media has granted everyone the right to express themselves without suffering consequences. Sadly, many Christians stand on their soapboxes proclaiming extremely harsh words to other believers while forgetting how serious Jesus considers such actions, for “these little ones” (or vulnerable ones) refers to all of us as believers (not just children). Our Lord’s harsh admonition regarding offending those in the faith, whether we are in complete agreement with their views or not, should at minimum make us reconsider our words before openly and so easily casting criticisms and offenses, and at most, remind us to first be humble. Today, when it seems everyone feels entitled to their opinions, let us remember this admonition from Jesus and be true to James’ teaching regarding being quick to listen and slow to speak. Let us first work out the log in our own eye.
