Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem to fulfill His mission of redeeming the world through the cross. As He drew closer to Calvary, Jesus gradually and clearly began revealing His ultimate purpose and calling to His disciples. That calling involved suffering, death, and resurrection (Matt. 16: 21-23). He made it plain that if this was His lot, then His followers would also not have it easy. They, too, would have to suffer and even lay down their lives for the sake of His name and mission. Today, amidst persecution in India, we must proclaim Christ in such a way that new believers will understand following Jesus is a decision to live a life of commitment, self-denial, and suffering. It is not something that was hidden in fine print — Jesus placed it in bold letters for everyone who would follow Him.
