This is in the story of Jesus’ entry to Jerusalem. The principal elements of Zechariah’s prophecy (Zech. 9:9) are present in Jesus’ actions and in the response of the pilgrims who walk along with Him. Jesus is recognized in terms that hint at His royal messianic identity that will become explicit at the end of the week in His confession before the high priest (Mark 14:61) and in His crucifixion by the Romans as “King of the Jews” (Mark 15:26). Therefore, this entry sets the stage for the drama involving Jesus and political leadership. The Israelites wanted Jesus to save them from their political enemies, but Jesus came to save all people from their sin. It is important that we look beyond national and political agendas to be able to see the Gospel. God, make us your true disciples!
