If you read the context around this passage, Jesus is warning His disciples to prepare for persecution. He tells them what they will suffer, and from whom. In this way, Christ has dealt fairly and faithfully with all who follow Him, in telling us the worst we can face while in His service. He would also have us deal so with ourselves, by sitting down and counting the cost of following Him. Sufferings from friends and relations, the fear of man, and many other trials can bring a snare that disturbs our peace, by which we are drawn into sin. Therefore, we must be aware that the trials are coming and be prepared to suffer well. Any kind of tribulation cannot take away God’s love for us or ours for Him. When God calls us to speak for Him, we depend on Him to teach us what to say. Let us boldly confess Christ, and show love to Him in all things.
