This person who approached Jesus knew who He was — a great teacher and the giver of eternal life, the only true way to His Father in Heaven. He knew the great commandments and “kept” all of them. But did he really love God with all his heart, soul, and mind? He asked Jesus what good deed he must perform to have eternal life, and as the conversation progresses, Jesus pinpoints the man’s idol: his wealth. If that rich young man would have chosen to part with his worldly treasures, it wouldn’t have earned him entry into eternity, but it would have reflected God’s saving grace within him. Paul understood this when he said in Phil. 3:8, “I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” Rich or poor, we must make Jesus central to our lives. When we do, we are willing to give up everything.
