I used to wonder why the disciples of Jesus asked Him this question. Could it be that they wanted to know if one was greater than the other, to find out what kind of power they would have when they reached Heaven? That seems likely, since there was another incident in Matt. 20 when a mother asked Jesus to grant her sons important positions in His Kingdom. The disciples were just like us. We always want greatness in our lives. We want to be considered better than our peers. How did Jesus respond? In Matt. 18:2-4, Jesus reveals that He values childlike humility. Do we have that kind of humility? When others hurt us, do we hold onto it and build up bitterness in our hearts, or do we humble ourselves like a child with a reconciling spirit to forgive the person? We need to think of others before we think of ourselves. Humility doesn’t come by itself. With God’s grace, it remains in a person. It might happen in the beginning through a conscious effort, but over the years, it becomes a habit!
