Today, hearing a family member rant, yet again, about a recurring conflict they were facing with another family member, I found myself saying, “Please ask God to help. Maybe you should start reading Galatians 5 to help you cultivate the fruit of the Spirit.” In the past, my immediate reaction had always been to step into the peacemaker’s role, reasoning from the two conflicting parties’ perspectives with the hope that they would be able to understand where the other party was coming from. I had always wanted them to feel better, for the party I deemed to be in the wrong to realize the error of their ways, and for everyone to communicate better so we could put an end to these painful episodes.
I always walked away feeling drained, frustrated, and angry — how ironic for someone whose intention had been to be the peacemaker! But today was different. Perhaps by the prompting of the Holy Spirit, I finally let God come to my rescue. I turned my eyes to His Word, pointed the person seeking my counsel to His Word, and spared both of us the futility of my limited human reasoning and its resulting temptation to work myself into anger and frustration. If Jesus even reminded Himself in the face of temptation that man lives by “every word that comes from the mouth of God,” how much more do I need that reminder?
