One of the celebrated events in my country is the birth of a child. This is followed by the naming ceremony. Names are very important; a person’s name connects to their identity and individuality. Names can relate to the person’s role in biblical narratives. Names can represent human hopes and revelations. “To us a child is born, to us a Son is given” is a prophetic message given to the Israelites during difficult times. “The government shall be upon His shoulder” connects them to a leader who will have authority to rule and will be just in His dealings with them. Wonderful Counselor is a name that relates to the advice, listening ear, and comfort this Child will offer. Mighty God relates to the greatness of the promised Child: He will be mighty in battle and will emerge victorious. Everlasting Father speaks of the Father who does not abandon His people in difficult situations and circumstances; He is always present. Prince of Peace is a name that relates to the much-needed peace they were seeking. Connecting to the names in the passage gives us great assurance of a better future and that the promises of God our Father will come to pass.
