My adoptive mom once shared with me how apprehensive and resistant she was to the idea of adoption. Despite experiencing several heartbreaking miscarriages, she never wanted or even thought of having a child that was not her own. “How could I love and care for someone else’s child?” she once confided. She eventually agreed to take me in, seeing how my adoptive father desperately wanted a boy of his own. I may never know how she came to love and care for me as her own, but she did. I have always felt loved, and that is all that matters. John 13:34 may be an overwhelming command, especially when it comes to loving someone not our own. But if we follow God’s command, love will always be felt by the people we show our love to. In 1 John 4:18, we are reminded that love does not involve fear. We ask the Lord to teach us to love despite our fears and hesitations. May He remind us of His command to love one another.
