This is one of my favorite verses. Since I became acquainted with this verse, my life’s ambition is clear: to know God and make Him known. One of my favorite songs is also related to this idea: “The greatest thing in all my life is knowing you / The greatest thing in all my life is knowing you / I want to know you more / I want to know you more.” Knowing God involves listening to God’s Word, noting and emulating God’s behavior, walking and working with God daily, and recognizing and accepting the leading of God’s Spirit. The Bible puts flesh on these bare bones of ideas by using pictures and analogies. It tells us that we know God in the manner of a son knowing his father, a wife knowing her husband, a subject knowing his king, and a sheep knowing its shepherd. This kind of knowledge of an intimate relationship takes time. It will even take all eternity to fully learn and know God.
