Jesus was an expert in the art of teaching by using illustrations and metaphors. In John 15, Jesus uses the image of the vine and its branches to describe the kind of relationship every disciple must have with Him in order to bring glory to God. The main expression is the verb “to abide” and is used by Jesus several times. We are called to abide in Him or, to use a contemporary word, to be connected to Him. Jesus says that apart from Him we can do nothing. He also reminds us that when we have intimacy with Him, our lives will produce fruit. Fruit is what is produced in our lives as a result of a conscious decision to abide in Jesus’ words, and the direct result produces a positive impact in people’s lives. Abiding in Jesus means more of Him in your thoughts, desires, and activities — and less of you. Do you want to fulfill your call and bring more glory to God? Jesus shows us the only way. Jesus says the secret of a productive life is to abide in Him.
