As Sadhu Sundar Singh — Indian missionary and writer of the hymn, “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus” — and a companion were traveling through a pass high in the Himalayan Mountains, they came across a man lying in the snow. Sadhu was compassionate and willing to assist, but his companion decided to go on alone, refusing to help. Sadhu carried the man on his back. In doing so, both men were able to share body heat. The wounded man eventually recovered and was able to walk independently beside Sadhu. Soon, they caught up to Sadhu’s former companion, now dead in the snow. Sadhu, who was willing to lose his life on behalf of another, found it. But his companion, who sought to save his own life, lost it. When I gave my life to full-time ministry, I sold everything I had. To the eyes of the world, I have lost everything, but in God’s, I gained everything. I have never lacked anything. In fact, I gained beyond what you could imagine. I have never felt so enriched in my life.
