When my country, Kenya, attained independence in 1963, it had an estimated population of about 12 million. The population is now about 56 million with over 70 distinct ethnic groups, each group ranging in size from over 7 million to less than 500 people. How do you keep such a nation united, despite a rapidly growing population, very diverse ethnic cultures, and a multitude of challenges after attaining independence? The composers of our national anthem may have been inspired by Mark 3:24 when they wrote the first stanza: “O God of all creation. Bless this our land and nation. Justice be our shield and defender. May we dwell in unity, peace, and liberty. Plenty be found within our borders.” Kenya has, over the years, remained a stable beacon of peace, a place of refuge in a region where nations have crumbled because of civil wars and mismanagement. This success has required the hand of God. Whether we are talking of a nation, a family, a local church, a congregation, a fellowship, or a Christian institution, to remain united, it must be God-centered. It is only the sovereign Lord who is able to bless with justice, unity, peace, liberty, and provision.
