The Pharisees misinterpreted and misapplied the laws governing the Sabbath. They made these laws particularly burdensome and strict beyond reasonableness. To them, it was unlawful to do anything on the Sabbath that required any use of energy, like in the story of our text. Jesus accused the Pharisees of hypocrisy, saying their teachings were but rules taught by men (Matt. 15:7-9; Isa. 29:13). In my country, Cameroon, some religious denominations impose various extraneous laws and regulations. In some, everyone must move about barefooted; in others, ministers are forbidden to get married, and some others forbid their members from receiving medical attention when they are sick. Throughout His ministry, Jesus teaches us religion is not a question of rituals, laws, traditions, rules, and regulations, but of relationship.
