As I ponder this verse, the idea of building a house on the sand evokes memories of building collapses in my homeland, which mostly result from failing to take safety precautions, cutting corners, not following regulations, and taking the easy way. In many cases, the collapse leaves behind mourners, tears, and lost lives, all of which would not have been, had the owners/builders taken the pains to do the right thing by securing the building’s foundation, adhering to specifications, and investing in necessary resources. We humans are naturally drawn toward following simple paths in life, so hearing and acting on God’s Word is not easy for us. However, as God’s children, there is no alternative, nor should there be. No matter how painful or costly it may be, acting on God’s Word is our only sure basis for the strength, stability, courage, and resilience we need to face the vagaries of life, limit our exposure to their effects, avoid being destroyed by them, and ultimately, to enjoy God!
